Tesla, the electric vehicle giant led by Elon Musk, has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025. The store is located at the upscale Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking a significant milestone for India’s growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.
Ahead of the launch, Tesla imported six Model Y vehicles along with supporting equipment from China and the United States. The total value of the shipment is estimated to be around ₹1 crore.
Due to India’s high import duties—approximately 70% on completely built vehicles—the prices of Tesla cars are significantly higher than in other global markets. The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is expected to be priced at around ₹60 lakh, while the Model Y Long Range could cost about ₹68 lakh, excluding taxes and insurance.
By comparison, these models are available in the U.S. for around $45,000, showing a significant pricing gap due to import levies and logistics costs in India.
Tesla has chosen a retail-first strategy, focusing on setting up showrooms before establishing a manufacturing plant. This is contrary to the Indian government’s preference for companies to set up local factories in exchange for reduced import duties. A second showroom is already in the pipeline for Delhi, with more cities likely to follow.
With this premium launch, Tesla aims to tap into India’s high-end urban market—targeting affluent buyers interested in advanced electric vehicles. The move positions Tesla in direct competition with established luxury carmakers operating in India.
Despite the steep pricing, Tesla’s arrival is being seen as a bold step toward strengthening the country’s EV landscape and expanding its global presence, even in markets with complex regulatory environments.
