Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, recently drove a Tesla Model Y outside Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai, following the launch of Tesla’s first official showroom in India. He was joined by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, drawing attention from fellow legislators and the media. The drive symbolized the state government’s strong support for electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
The newly opened showroom, called the “Experience Centre,” is located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, called the launch “a powerful statement,” saying that Mumbai represents innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability—values that align with Tesla’s global mission.
Fadnavis also encouraged Tesla to go beyond car sales and invest in local research, development, and manufacturing in Maharashtra, suggesting the state could become a hub for EV production.
Tesla has started importing fully built Model Y SUVs from its Shanghai factory. Six vehicles have already arrived for display and test drives. The Model Y is priced between ₹59.9 lakh and ₹67.9 lakh (ex-showroom), with the high-end Long Range version offering a claimed range of up to 622 km. Tesla has also brought Supercharger equipment and invested over $1 million in chargers and accessories for the Indian market.
Prominent industry figures, including Anand Mahindra, welcomed Tesla’s debut, noting that increased competition would drive innovation in India’s EV landscape. With strong policy support and infrastructure expansion, Maharashtra is positioning itself as a leader in the country’s electric mobility future.
